The El Sereno Recreation Center is located in a public park at the base of a gathering of small foothills, which are a prominent feature of the community and serve as a backdrop for the project. The building is sited within an environment where landscaping and the topography of the hills play a significant role in defining the character of the community. Our design solution for this project creates a gently curving roof that recalls the sloping form of the hillside, enhancing its natural setting.
The massing is a composition of distinct programmatic elements where forms and curves overlap and intersect. The use of materials such as blue glazed concrete block, copper, and translucent panels draw upon the natural elements of the park, such as water, light, trees and grass, but are also highly durable; a requirement for a public structure such as this one. The facility’s design reflects its duality as both a playful recreation facility, and a modern and dynamic civic landmark for the community.
